He has gone bankrupt with P500,000 in dept but became financially free 3 years after and is now operating 3 multi-million businesses! Crazy, right? This book which was written by him, hit me so bad. I can't express in words how it made me felt positive and inspired. Last week, I received a book from multi-millionaire Don Soriano.
"Break Free" by Don Soriano
8 Principles to Get from Employee to Employer in 3 Years or Less
8 Principles to Get from Employee to Employer in 3 Years or Less
Okay, so this book doesn’t revolve
on his story alone. Here, he shares the principles on how you can
get from employee to employer in 3 years or less. You can get all the learnings
in 1 hour guaranteed, Well, that's what the book says but if you're like me where you tend to
contemplate on things in almost every paragraph, that won't work. Hihi. (But that's a good thing, honestly) I love to travel and memories for me are the the best places.
I remember when I, myself was
working in a real estate company. One of the seminars which I attended there
thought us to instill in our minds that we should be “mukhang pera” in order to
push ourselves in getting clients. It’s somehow true but having that mindset
loses the goal of being successful and be completely happy. Quoting words from
Don Soriano’s book, “True happiness can never be found in money. True happiness
is a choice. You can choose to be happy whether you had the money or not." And since I learned a lot from this book, I’m doing a book review series. Yes, when I say A LOT, one post isn't enough. Alright, so here are some pieces of advice I got from the the first Chapter, Principle #1. Go read and absorb them.
1. According to the author, we
should be a sponge. Work on ourselves, improve all our habits, look up to
successful people and model their mindset and philosophies. Soak in all the
information and start to change.
2. It brought
me into realizations and transported me
into the days where I work in Dubai. I spent my 2 years, working in a photography studio. It’s somehow related with my business today but the difference is, I’m an
employee that time and I’m not a photographer when I was there. Guess what? I worked with that foreign company with the
thought of leaving soon and just get some infos so I could start a business on
my own. You know, I wasn’t ME during those period of my life. I chose not to be the best employee on those years. I do have personal reasons, yes.
#1 is that you don’t show-off all your talents abroad. Your boss might either
appreciate it or abuse it. Okay, so it’s either you’ll get promoted (which is
very rare since in reality, they prioritize other nationalities) or you get to
work with a lot of duties not included in your job description, and the list
goes on. So what did I do? I resigned. I went back to my homeland and started
my own biz immediately. But reading the first chapter in this book made me think,
uh-oh! I was wrong somehow. Bottom line is, I shoudn't play superhero and take the risk of
working on my own immediately. I learned that I should also consider some things as well. In my case, I relied so much with my skills without any background in photography so I had to build my protfolio for a couple of months, etc.
3. “Don’t quit your job and take the leap just because you have a ‘great business idea’ - Don Soriano”
Never do something just because you’re after the money. You want freedom from your 9-5 job? That’s the reason? Wrong. See more of the explanation inside the book.

4. “Idle
time is the devil’s playground. -Don Soriano”
We shouldn’t allow ourselves to waste time. We should be productive and make sure we learn something new from time to time.

5. Some were like, “I can’t do this, I can’t do that.” “I have other priorities other than that.” or “I’m contented with this salary, I’m okay really.”
Closing your mind with all the possibility that you can be successful can hinder yourself from reaching your goals. Question is, are you willing to make your dreams a reality or you’re just relaxed with dismissing your dreams because you’ll know it’ll never happen? According to Don Soriano, you’re just making an excuse to make yourself feel better as to why you still haven’t achieved the life you want. And it’s true! But first things first, have the book. Read more with this chapter and the rest by purchasing at the book. Master the principles and apply it. As the author said, "Experience is the NOT the best teacher. The experience of others is an even better teacher. It’s less expensive.” We don’t have to make the same mistakes that happened to him, learn from it and the rest will follow. (If only I read this book that time, I'd be wiser with my decisions...)
